WHAT IS THE GOLF STUDIO AND WHY DOES IT EXIST?

Over 20 years ago, I opened my first studio in downtown Grand Rapids with early ball flight monitors, a putting green and four nets, lots of teaching aids, and video feedback.  I taught high school and college players who needed to make changes in their golf swings while not in the heat of their competitive seasons.   Supervising their daily practice worked and during that first stretch, I had an NCAA National Champion, multiple Michigan High School State Champions, and was privileged to assist many champion amateur golfers along their golf journey. Upon accepting the Director of Golf position at Blythefield Country Club, I was able to broaden my programming from very committed avid golfers to include winter fun, skill improvement, and even introduction to the game by adding recreational golfers who would practice weekly. Like in so much of our daily life, the technology has really improved the experience and made it more widely available as now we can play golf courses and have the images projected on the screen. That being said, the intention and layout of The Golf Studio continue to be focused on selecting equipment and designing programs that offer measurable results for golfers in pursuit of their personal goals.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED (Or been reminded of) SINCE THE FIRST STUDIO:

Golf is an individual sport, played by unique body types and personalities.  While information is important, application and understanding of your swing mechanics and distinctive feel matter much more than comparison to an ideal. When you work out like a tour player, you should copy their swing, until then optimize your swing and make it easier to perform and repeat.  Accurate feedback matters from the artificial turf you hit off to the clubface and launch conditions to the type of golf ball you practice with.  Transition to outside matters – a lot.  Once the snow melts, it’s imperative to have your coach with you as you transition to aiming and playing.  Having your very best results be more consistent in a sport where everything changes is not a goal for improvement, especially playing once a week. Getting stuck in mechanics or trackman numbers does not automatically equate to lower scores on the golf course. Short game matters as does situational practice. Mental game is a skill that can be taught, learned, and developed. It takes creativity, commitment and care to advance your golf game during the off-season.
